E-bike recovered in Berlin: GPS tracker leads police to the crime scene

In the early hours of 30 April, Yvonne K.* reports the theft of her e-bike in east Berlin. But the thief didn’t know that he made a bad choice.

It’s about 2 a.m. on 30 April. While Yvonne K.* is probably still sleeping, a bicycle thief makes off with her bike that was at her home, near Friedrichshain Hospital. The thief saws through the bike stand in the cellar and flees with the bike.

First he moves slowly for some time, probably on foot, in the same district east of the borough of Berlin. Three hours later, shortly before Yvonne K.* even becomes aware of the theft, he continues his flight. It seems he has now cracked the lock, because he’s moving at a speed of up to 17 km/h eastwards along the Karl-Marx-Allee onto the Frankfurter-Allee in the direction of Lichtenberg. There, he stops again near Monimbo Platz.

Yvonne K.* immediately reports the theft early in the morning at around 5:30 a.m. via the IT’S MY BIKE app. The Bike Hunters from IT’S MY BIKE get on the trail straight away – thanks to the built-in GPS tracker, they can track the most recent geolocation data points. The e-bike is now at its final stop, in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The Bike Hunters inform the police straight away. Officers then drive to the location and can now successfully recover the e-bike, which is parked outside with a new lock.
