Münster: stolen e-bike found using GPS localisation

Münster, February 2020. Sometimes not even the most effective lock can help: thieves managed to appropriate a firmly secured e-bike under the cover of the night in the German city of Münster. It could have been worse for the owner, but things turned out fine in the end as his e-bike was fitted with a concealed IT’S MY BIKE GPS tracker.

The bicycle owner had done the right thing: after coming home from a ride, he securely locked his e-bike to a guard rail in a well-lit rear courtyard. Bicycle owner Frederick Frank (in photo) thought the bike was safe, parked directly under his bedroom window and secured with both a robust frame lock and a chain. Yet the thieves were undeterred by all these precautions, but what they didn’t realise was that the e-bike was fitted with an IT’S MY BIKE GPS tracker.

The IT’S MY BIKE app reported that the e-bike had been moved at 3:20 a.m. Since the owner was fast asleep at the time, he didn’t see the message until the next morning. Thanks to the GPS tracker, the app was still able to locate the exact location of the e-bike only 900 meters away many hours later, where the owner discovered his e-bike unlocked in a rear courtyard. There was no trace of the thieves, however. The police, who had been notified in the meantime, arrived at the scene a short time later, took down the details of the circumstances and collected DNA samples from the bike lock. The officers suspected an angle grinder had been used to open the locks.

Even though the police are no longer pursuing the investigation and were unable to catch the thieves, IT’S MY BIKE’s GPS tracker did a thorough job, making yet another e-biker happy.
